This may come out like I am being offensive towards you, but the offense is really meant towards Ms Rowling: If you normally notice such character lapses in novels but didn't see them in this then it doesn't speak very highly of the sort of novels you usually read. Rowling is an excellent storyteller but her characters (Luna included) exist solely to serve the story...they're poorly developed in general, but Ginny is particularly poorly developed for someone whom we're supposed to belive is perfect. Just as I generally want substantive proof of REAL people's good traits before I believe them (heresay isn't enough, no "OMG Jill is SO brave!") I want that same proof with fictional characters. Rowling's tendency to tell rather than show is evident in many aspects of the book, but Ginny is particularly irritating to me because I have encountered the exact opposite attitude towards her from the one you have. You say you hear people complain about her all the time and I usually hear people gasp in horror when anyone dare insult her. (Exception: people with literature backgrounds, and I do know a few.) Everyone knew Harry and Ginny were inevitable from the way the books were written; no one is contesting that. It's the sheer inevitability that's so ridiculous. Novels, even those set in fantasy worlds, should be realistic. ESPECIALLY when it comes to inter-personal relations. Yet the only people that don't marry their childhood sweethearts are the ones that didn't have childhood sweethearts! Please. (Note I am not counting Lily and Severus or Albus and Gellert as childhood sweethearts. I mean requited sweethearts.) That said, feel free to love her as Rowling loves her. I don't particularly care. Whatever increases your enjoyment of a novel is a good thing!

I like Luna for the exact reaons you dislike her, I think. She's absurd and delightful; she's the comic relief and yea, a bit like a cartoon character. We're not supposed to believe anything about her besides that she's a space-case. My belief isn't strained by that...I can see it from what's actually being shown to me, not just what's being told to me. Her sole purpose isn't to be someone's love interest (a literary trope I actually find insulting. To women AND to the intelligence of the reader); her sole purpose is to move action forward and break up tension with a good laugh.

Hermione stopped bothering me in this book. She was much worse in earlier ones! She bothers me more in the movies actually.

I like the review. I must confess, I don't mind Ginny. I think we do see quite a bit of her, especially compared to others, and I thought here transition level was GoF and compared to Hermione, she's so wonderful and not a manipulative bitchy nagging person. I personally think that the comments about always being told how perfect and awesome she is and how they have an awesome connection are grossly exaggerated. And how JKR's adamant the reader likes her. I usually get irritated when that happens and I gotta say, didn't happen in the HP series. Which was JKR's intention as well was it not ... for Harry to realize how perfect for him she was ? I get irritated by crap like that very easily and it's never once bothered me so I haven't noticed it at all which makes me think it's not as prominent as everyone whines about it being. I get their relationship actually .. throughout the books he's aware of her and they have this similar humour and they enjoy the same things and that draws them together, especially once Ginny is past the stage where she's intimated by him. I've never personally spoken to anyone who's said that but seen quite a few people online say it ... so I don't know it. I don't really get it.

That being said, what made you like Luna so much in this book ? I find myself completely unethusiastic about Luna while everyone raves about her . I just don't see what's so special about her ... she's like a cartoon character to me ... perhaps you could elaborate on why you really like ? I'd love to know why ....

Kirsten, I feel the same way. Today, while reading up on Daily KOs and other sites, I decided that I was going to cancel my plans to watch election coverage. How incredibly nerdy is that?!

Luckily, my roomate is as nerdy as I am when it comes to politics. While I never agree with him, he is at least informed, and I respect the interesting debate.

Yeh... and I also thought to mention that your second para about how Jkr is a good story teller but has structural problems very much. You hit right on the point. Thats precisely my thoughts. And can you please tell me about that better fanfiction you mentioned? I also happen to have a fav. fanfiction that is better written than DH and I am having a suspection you are talking about it as well, and if your not I want to read the better ones of yours. Thanks

Awesome, awesome review awesome!!! One of the reason is that your opinions and ideas matches with me so much that is a little amazing. You managed to write many things very expressively that I know in my mind but can't describe them.

It was very pleasant to read. You made made laugh so many times and I can guess you like Luna a lot:D

Anyway I am totally with you in Ginerva and Snape matter. I mean come on why can't we see by our own eyes what a cool girl Ginny is. Why do we have to always be told about it, like we would never believe otherwise?? I like you always wanted to see the best of her as she is suppose to be Harry's mate but till the very end we have been told about her not shown *sigh*. I was just about beginning to laugh in DH where there was a line like" Ginny was rarely weepy, it was on of the many wonderful things about her" ???? What the... What wonderful things?? and if there were what was the harm of showing them to us?

As to Snape, I like him a lot, I've always believed him to be good and Snape/Lily plot, always..... but come on, I mean she wrapped all the Snape plot in a nice little wrapper of Lily and it makes him look like a 2-dimensional character. The connection she made of Harry, Snape and Voldemort as abandoned boys, "lately only those whom I cannot save" seems like the only and only things that has anything to do outside Lily and they needed exploration too. I don't like her Lily wrapper on Snape the way it was done and I was always a Snape/Lily believer.

And the epilogue, what was that?? if it weren't for the Albus Severus I would have liked to throughly ignore it, my brother has declared it ignorned. I loved this "bravest man" but as you said she should have shown us more of Harry's feeling on Snape instead of abruptly jumping on it.

I also happen to be a few of those person who like Lupin in DH. Yes at first I was a little depressed at his callous attitude with Harry in DH (I never ever had issues with his tonks problems, i can understand them) but now after a few days when I see him I can tell that his understanding, compassion coupled with an odd sort of detachment is what makes me like him sooo much.

I liked the book over all very much, there were many things I like in the book but they are too many to write here. Your review is excellent, avery good read even if you we are not in agreement at rare points "thumps up"
